CHIEF OF NAVAL STAFF Commodore Sheikh Arif Mahmood, (ND), BSP, ndc, psc, BN
Commodore Sheikh Arif Mahmood joined Bangladesh Navy in January 1981 and was commissioned in the Executive branch in December 1983. He completed his basic training course in different training institution of Bangladesh Navy. He is a specialist on Navigation and Direction and a distinguished graduate of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He also did Maritime Model Service Code Phase-II (WCN 0091) from Maritime warfare Centre, USA in 2002 and Computer Skills Training Course, Advanced Communication skills Course, Asia Pacific Security Studies Executive Course from USA in the year of 2003. He has also undergone the National Defence College Course in Dhaka 2013. He completed the Bachelor of Security Studies from BUP in Dhaka in 2014. His academic qualifications include C++ Programming with Operating Systems from Ahsanullah University of Science & Technology in the year of 1997. He has commanded almost every type of Warship of Bangladesh Navy starting from a Missile Boat to a Frigate.
Commodore Arif has a blend of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments throughout his career. He worked at different times as Training Commander of Bangladesh Naval Academy, Member (Harbour and Marine) of Chittagong Port Authority, Deputy Director General and Zonal Commander of Bangladesh Coast Guard and Defence Advisor of Bangladesh in Malaysia. Presently, he is appointed as Managing Director of Dockyard and Engineering Works Ltd, Narayangangj. Prior joining to his present appointment he was Fleet Commander of Bangladesh Navy Fleet.
Commodore Arif had the unique opportunity of serving for world peace as UN Military Observer in Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2005. As a Military Observers in Burundi and Team Leader of Military Observers in DRC, he got a sizeable experience in the field of arms embargo inspection, border patrol, monitoring zone of confidence, enforcement of UN Resolution, observing electoral process, etc.
Commodore Arif Mahmood is happily married and has two sons. He enjoys occasional golf and reading.
